Massage oils are an important part of physical therapy routines which are undertaken for stress relief, mental as well as physical relaxation. Massage oils are considered a key ingredient to what makes a massage successful as their aroma performs many functions. Massage oils thus give the massages the alternate name of aromatherapy.

Massage oils are an effective way to relieve the body of stress and build strength into it because they draw on the most basic of human instincts, the sense of smell. Aroma therapy and the use of massage oils also help in beauty care. Massage oils are also part of the mind, body and soul philosophy of healing and health care.

Massage oils are not the invention of this century or something cooked up in a laboratory. These are pure herbal extracts from various plants with proven medicinal properties. The use of massage oils is ancient. It goes back 5000 B.C. when the Egyptian used oils to preserve the bodies of the pharos. Aromatic oils were also used by the Greeks, Romans, Chinese, the Persians, etc. As early as the 16th century 60 essences were known and used for therapeutic purposes. As medical science gained greater insight into the properties of each essence, the mixtures began to be separated and each essence was used for a more specialized purpose.

So what basically is a massage oil or aromatic oil or essential oil? An essential oil is the concentrated volatile essence of an aromatic plant. The two most common methods of extracting are steam distillation and cold pressing. These oils contain a number of active ingredients that can be altered depending on the climate, the location, the time of harvest or the part of the plant being harvested. Therefore, each essential oil derived from the same botanical variety can have its unique chemical profile.

Massage oils can be used for purposes, such as specific aromas for stress relief, skin treatment, relief from muscle pain, relief from joint pain, etc. In addition to being used during massages, massage oils are also added to baths to getting a more relaxing experience.

But there are times when you should be careful about using massage oils, for instance of your pregnant, breast feeding, have a heart condition, diabetes, etc. it's not to say that having a massage or using massage oils with theses health conditions is harmful, but you need to consult your physician about the best kind of Massage and massage oil to be used in your condition. There may also be certain movements that may not be at all suited to your condition.

Some nice massage oils are;

1. Sweet Almond Oil: this is one of the most favored massage oils by therapists. The oil is the extracted from almonds and is pale yellow in color. Sweet Almond oil is not all that oily, in fact it's quite light and absorbs promptly into the skin.
